The Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) “Get engaged now!” petition is part of an array of efforts to mark the 20th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Democracy and the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Democracy.

The Universal Declaration on Democracy affirms the principles of democracy, the elements and exercise of democratic government, and the international scope of democracy.

Member Parliaments adopted the Universal Declaration on Democracy during the 98th Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference in September 1997.

In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly designated 15 September as the International Day of Democracy—with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy—and invited all Member States and organizations to commemorate the day with activities that contribute to raising public awareness.
